Wray Community District Hospital is excited to offer Genius 3D Mammography exams developed by Hologic, Inc. at the end of May 2021. Utilizing advanced tomosynthesis technology, the 3D exams are clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers and decrease the number of women asked to return for additional testing.
In the original 2D Mammography, overlapping tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed, and normal tissue may appear irregular, leading to more testing. A Genius exam has a three-dimensional method that can greatly reduce the tissue overlap appearance.
A Genius exam includes both 2D images and tomosynthesis scans. During the exam, an X-ray arm sweeps over the breast taking multiple images. The computer then changes the images into a stack of thin layers allowing the radiologist to look at the breast tissue one layer at a time. This exam requires no additional compression and takes just a few seconds longer than the 2D breast cancer screening.
Researchers have found that the Genius 3D Mammography exam finds 20%-65% more invasive breast cancers compared to 2D. Genius 3D has also been FDA approved as superior for women with dense breasts. Because the images are more detailed, 3D Mammography reduces callbacks for more testing by up to 40%.
“Wray Hospital is committed to the fight against breast cancer,” declares John Hart, CEO. “By offering the Genius exam, the hospital provides a more accurate tool for breast cancer screening.”
